Every season, our sartorial senses are flooded with an onslaught of trendy items, all vying for position as the next big thing in fashion.
It’s exhausting, not to mention prohibitively expensive, to try and keep pace with the changing of the fashion tides season after season.
However, there is a way for a fashion enthusiast to update her wardrobe while staying within the confines of either her budget or the physical limitations of her closet.
Jewelry is an excellent way to dabble in a trend without making a large financial, spacial, or sartorial commitment. Here are five of our favourite jewelry trends that are currently trending for summer, and will make a great addition to any wardrobe.
1. Zodiac Jewelry
Zodiac jewelry, popular in the 1970s, is making the rounds once again. This time, zodiac jewelry was made popular with the help of the Valentino Spring/Summer 2014 show in which zodiac pendants were shown double wrapped around the neck and wrists.
Luckily, you do not have to spend a lot to take advantage of this particular trend as the mythical-looking creatures of the zodiac are available from many high street retailers as well as major design houses and for a fraction of the cost.
2. Anything Oversized
Large, statement-making pieces were all over the spring/summer runways giving fashion fans endless ways to really punch-up a simple look with the addition of just one piece. At Balmain, oversized gold chain-link necklaces and cuffs adorned the wrists and necks of the models.
At Saint Laurent, enormous woven-chain architectural chokers were worn by models in the house’s new spins on the traditional YSL Le Smoking tuxedo jackets.
These oversized pieces are effective largely (pun intended) due to the fact that they simultaneously add both a touch of luxury and a dash of whimsy to any breezy summer look, giving it the perfect balance of femininity and edge.
3. Feather And Fur Bracelets
We likely have Miuccia Prada to thank, once again, for at least the feather bracelet trend. After being spotted on the spring/summer 2014 runways at Prada, bracelets adorned with feathers began to appear on the high street.
Likewise, Delfina Delattrez‘s unique pieces she created for the Fendi spring/summer collection boast flourishes of fur and feathers that invoke images of a talisman, and have inspired budget knockoffs the world over.
Both of these looks are sure-fire ways to add interest to a look with quite literally the flick of a wrist.
4. Gold Bracelets
Gold, whether it be traditional yellow or the once again popular rose gold, always looks good against the tawny glow of summer skin. This summer is proving to be no exception to this tried and tested rule.
At Alexander McQueen, stacks of gold warrior-themed cuffs were stacked up the arm.
At Chloe, the house’s signature cuff was reinvented into a softer, smoother, more fluid version of itself.
Gold arm cuffs have been making a comeback on the arms of celebrities already this season, upping the ante for how and where we will be wearing our gold.
5. Ear Cuffs
Finally, we have a way to add a bit of rock star edge to your look without having to submit to the pain or commitment of multiple piercings.
Ear cuffs have been quietly creeping their way back into our fashion vernacular over the past few seasons.
This time, these more modern versions have an artisan, almost tribal quality to them that is sure to make anything you pair them with look unique and fresh; everyone from Topshop to Stephen Webster has a version of this popular style, making it very affordable and accessible to fashion lovers everywhere.
These five styles are really just the tip of the accessory iceberg when it comes to fresh summer jewelry styles. Perhaps what makes this season’s offerings so unique is not so much that designers are coming out with jewelry styles that we’ve never seen before; it’s that they are re-inventing styles that we have seen, turning up the volume, and re-designing them in a way that makes them feel fresh all over again.
